Tawny Frogmouths, which belong to the Nightjar family, are often confused with owls, which are raptors. The Frogmouths are nocturnal birds that capture arthropods, snails and small vertebrates by flying to the ground. These birds roost by day often without shelter, relying on their excellent and effective camouflage plumage to evade a predator. They are often perched together in groups of 3 to 4 on the same branch.

Tawny Frogmouths live in woodland areas and therefore can be found throughout the Blue Mountains. Since their flight are silent, as with owls, they are not often seen.
